What are Antiques?

Antiques are collectible objects that hold high value due to their age, craftsmanship, and historical significance. While the definition of what constitutes an antique can vary based on factors like the item type, its origin, and the year it was created, the general standard is that an item must be at least 100 years old to qualify as an antique. Some items, such as motor vehicles, may be considered antiques at a younger age, with some definitions setting the benchmark at 25 years.

In the United States, the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act offered a formal definition, recognizing items produced before 1830 as antiques. The act categorized antiques as works of art (excluding rugs and carpets made after 1700), bronze, marble, pottery, porcelain, and other objects that were created for artistic, ornamental, or educational purposes.

Antiquities vs. Antiques

While antiques generally refer to valuable items from past centuries, the term antiquities is often used to describe ancient objects or artifacts from early human history, especially those that have archaeological significance. An antiquarian is someone who studies or collects antiquities and objects from earlier times.
